The Department of Anesthesiology provides state-of-the-art care for approximately 25,000 patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures each year. Highly trained anesthesiologists are available in all surgical specialty disciplines including cardiac, thoracic-foregut, neurosurgery, organ transplantation, ear nose and throat, vascular, bariatric, colorectal, urology, gynecology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and sports medicine.
Programs and services of the Department of Anesthesiology include:
- Clinical anesthesia (general and regional) provided by physicians who are sub-specialty trained in all of the surgical disciplines.
- Critical care medicine with specialists who have undergone additional training in this area.
- Pain medicine with an acute perioperative pain service, cancer pain management service, a palliative medicine program and a multidisciplinary chronic (non-cancer) pain service. The chronic pain program includes stress reduction and bio-feedback training and acupuncture as well as conventional pharmaceutical, exercise and interventional management strategies.
The department's 74 faculty, 54 residents, and 2 fellows work together as an anesthesia care team to achieve the department's mission of providing safe, effective, patient-centered care. They also advance basic biomedical research in the field of anesthesiology aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals and society.
